How VCs Use Visible Dashboards to Track, Compare, and Share Portfolio Performance

Nick Kramer

In venture capital, the ability to quickly visualize and communicate portfolio data makes all the difference. Whether you’re preparing for a partner meeting, reviewing performance with founders, or summarizing fund results for LPs, Visible dashboards give you the flexibility and structure you need to tell your portfolio’s story.

Visible supports four types of dashboards, each with a dedicated purpose. Continue reading below to learn more:

Fully Customizable Dashboards

Flexible Dashboards

Flexible Dashboards are the most versatile option in Visible as they have no space restrictions, allowing you to include as many widgets, charts, and data points as you need in one view.

Flexible Dashboards can be created for individual portfolio companies and built directly at the company profile level, or for firm-wide overviews that bring together data from multiple companies. These dashboards are frequently used to share KPIs across your portfolio, visualize fund performance, or lead portfolio review discussions.

They can also be templatized, making it simple to create a repeatable dashboard layout for every portfolio company. If you’re looking for a flexible, insight-rich dashboard to centralize and share data, this is the place to start.

Tear Sheets

Tear Sheets are space restricted and designed to fit on a single page for easy exporting or printing. Think of them as a concise, high-level summary of a company’s performance which makes them ideal for sharing updates with LPs or partners.

Tear Sheets are fully customizable and can be templatized for quick replication across companies. Many firms use Tear Sheets as part of their quarterly reporting workflow to deliver a professional, easy-to-digest snapshot of each company’s health and progress.

How to Use Customizable Dashboards

Both Flexible Dashboards and Tear Sheets support a wide range of widgets so you can tailor what you’re tracking and how you present it:

  • Charts: Visualize portfolio metrics directly from your Visible account. You can add multiple metrics to a single chart, select your chart type, and adjust the time period or data aggregation. Learn more about creating charts here.
  • Insights: Add narrative context to your metrics using metric insights. Perfect for summarizing trends or key takeaways.
  • Tables: Display multiple metrics or insights side by side to compare performance over time.
  • Variance Reports: Compare actual performance against budgeted targets using structured tables via variance reports.
  • Custom Properties: Add qualitative data, such as leadership notes or company milestones, to complement your quantitative metrics with custom properties.
  • Plain Text Fields: Take notes during portfolio reviews or provide commentary next to charts.
  • Headings: Organize your dashboard with visual hierarchy to emphasize important sections.
  • Investments Widget: Include financing history or investment details for a company using the Investments Widget.

These widgets allow you to build dashboards that are not only data-rich but narrative-driven.

Creating Dashboard Templates

Dashboard Templates are a powerful feature available for both Flexible Dashboards and Tear Sheets.

Templates let you standardize your dashboards across all portfolio companies. When you create a template, the same widgets and layout appear for every company it’s applied to. This makes it easy to compare data consistently and avoid duplicating effort.

For example, you could create a “Monthly KPI Review” template that includes charts for revenue, burn, runway, and growth rate. Once applied to each company, you can switch between dashboards with a single click to review all your portfolio companies in a uniform view.

How to Use Prebuilt Dashboards

Benchmark Dashboards

Benchmark Dashboards are designed to help you compare companies across a single metric.

These dashboards let you quickly see which companies are performing the strongest or weakest, analyze quartiles, and identify outliers. They’re perfect for portfolio-wide analysis and comparing individual companies against group averages.

With Benchmark Dashboards, investors gain a clearer sense of how each company stacks up against peers to help inform follow-up conversations, internal reviews, and LP communications.

Fund Dashboards

The Fund Dashboard is a prebuilt dashboard generated from Visible’s auto-calculated fund metrics. These include critical indicators like IRR, multiple, TVPI, total invested, and other auto-calculated fields.

This dashboard provides a top-down view of your fund’s performance and overall health. It’s particularly useful during portfolio reviews or LP updates, where you need to summarize the fund’s return profile and key financial outcomes.
